  1. This, my friends, is value for money! A split 7 inch on WIAIWYA to promote their Springsteen tribute album, it comes with a free cdr album of the WP's doing 10 Springsteen songs. There isn't any recording information on the sleeve so it's not clear where or when this was done. There are a few extra people singing and either overdubs or extra musicians - my guess is a similar live set up to the Dan Of Green Gables cd, as it has the same kind of vibe, but I'd be interested to know the truth.

The 7 inch cherry picks a lovely If I Should Fall Behind and pairs it with Darren Hayman's electronic version of Girls In Their Summer Clothes. Hayman is responsible for pointing me in the direction of The Wave Pictures in the first place so it's a perfect match.

As for the cdr, and indeed the project as a whole, I didn't have high hopes. I don't really like to hear cover versions of songs I already know, or in this case, love. However, although I can't say I listen to this as much as the WP's own songs, it's a great collection. You really get a sense of the affection the songs hold for the band and there's a great sound captured by the recording.

The song selection is very interesting - nothing from before Born In The USA - and therefore it's devoid of anything which may be described as a Springsteen classic to the public at large. I guess this leaves room for them to carve out their own take on the songs, which works excellently. I'm not sure Born To Run, Hungry Hearts or Rosalita would work as well, whereas the spare songs of Tunnel Of Love et al allow the WP's to drag Bruce into their oeuvre, rather than embarrass themselves in his.

By the way, if you ever get the chance to hear Grant McLennan's version of If I Should Fall Behind, do so. It's magical.
