Well, this embarrassing. Third entry and I don't actually own it. Holding Hands is on the vinyl edition of Instant Coffee Baby, as of course is the A-side. Perhaps someone will tell me that these are totally different and essential versions and that I MUST get them. I hope so. The collector in me is already applying pressure.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, another great single and probably still their most "produced" song to date. The horns seems to go for a 60's soul effect and I can't help wondering if this was the record company getting them to polish up one track for a hit single. Not that I don't like them, they sound great and really embellish the tune, it's just the sound of the track is noticeably different to what the band seem to go for when left to their own devices. Holding Hands is a good B-side but, through its addition to the vinyl, probably becomes the worst track on the LP. It does however give the first sighting (in the Moshi Moshi period, at least) of the Crazy Horse guitar wig-out which Tattersall will use to greater effect on the Susan Rode The Cyclone LP. The recording of Holding Hands has a slight, but noticeable, distortion to it as well. This is either vaguely annoying or a terrific throwback to the pre-professional cd's, depending on your outlook.
In all then, an excellent single that I don't think I need to buy. Someone prove me wrong, please!
when i ordered this from moshi moshi it said it would come with 8 bonus tracks but it didn't. i wrote to moshi about it but never heard back. do you know anything about these mysterious 8 tracks?
ReplyDeleteThe 8 track aren't a physical release but a download file when you purchase from something from MM. It contains lots of good mp3's of bsides etc. If you had to create an account to order I'd log back in if i were you and have a look. Or mail moshi moshi. Good luck.
ReplyDeletei have a previous download from moshi moshi that has 8 tracks on it so i'm thinking that's the same thing they would've sent with my order of this EP, but since i had it they didn't attach additional copies. i just copied the list below. are these the 8 tracks?
